Templeton Sugarcane

Our newest edition: Sugarcane

One of the newest additions to Templeton Farming Enterprises is sugarcane. The farms purchased in Maryborough were historically sugarcane properties, and in keeping with this heritage, we continue to grow sugarcane as part of our crop rotation with ginger. Our Maryborough team brings extensive knowledge and expertise to the growing and harvesting process, producing around 20,000 tonnes of sugarcane each year, which is presently sent to the Isis Mill for processing.

Crop Diversity

We grow several sugarcane varieties to reduce the impact of pests and disease while adapting to seasonal variations. Our sustainable farming practices include a large on-site dam system to capture and reuse water efficiently, centre pivots for precise irrigation, and a trash blanket technique that helps minimise herbicide use, retain soil moisture, and build organic matter. These practices not only protect our crops but also enhance soil health and long-term productivity.

Best Management Practices

We continue to work closely with Sugar Research Australia on research projects and are in the final stages of achieving Sugarcane Best Management Practices (BMP) accreditation. Through our commitment to BMP, we’re improving water quality in local waterways that flow to the reef, reinforcing our belief that good farming and good environmental stewardship go hand in hand.
